Three finishes, in plain words

What each finish looks like, how it feels underfoot and how much looking-after it needs.

A general guide to common finishes, not a list of what Fernwick Concrete offers and not a price list. Ask which finishes are available when you request your estimate.

Broom finish

A stiff broom is dragged across the fresh surface, leaving fine ridges that give tires and shoes grip, even in the rain. It is the most common finish on driveways and walks.

02How it works

From first photo to first drive

  1. 01

    Tell us about it

Pick your project above, call, or text a few photos of the area.

  2. 02

    Get your estimate

Size, access and finish get talked through, then you get a price. The estimate is free.

  3. 03

    Prep and pour

The base is graded and compacted, forms go in with reinforcement where the job calls for it, then the concrete is placed and finished. Most driveways are poured within two or three working days.

  4. 04

    Let it cure

Walk on it after a day or two and park on it after about a week. Then it is ready for everyday life.

03Questions

Before you pour

Something else on your mind? Call or text (865) 555-0134.

01How soon can I walk or drive on new concrete?

Usually you can walk on it after a day or two and park a car on it after about a week. Concrete keeps gaining strength for about a month, so keep heavy trucks, trailers and dumpsters off it until then. Very hot or cold weather changes the timing.

02Will my new concrete crack?

Some hairline cracking is normal, because concrete shrinks slightly as it cures. The straight grooves cut into driveways and walks (control joints) give it a planned place to do that, and a well-compacted base keeps cracks small and tight.

03Should I seal it?

Sealing is optional for a plain broom finish, but it helps any concrete resist stains, oil and de-icing salt. Colored or patterned concrete is usually resealed every few years to protect the color. Let new concrete cure before it is sealed.

04Do you take small jobs and repairs?

Yes. We handle cracked steps, broken edges and small patch jobs.

05Is the estimate free?

Yes. Estimates are free.

06How long does a typical job take?

Most driveways are poured within two or three working days. After that, the concrete needs time to cure before you park on it.

07Which areas do you work in?

We work in Knoxville, Farragut, Maryville, Powell and Halls. Not sure if you're in range? Just ask.
